Three students escape death as hostel balcony collapses

IT was an unfortunate event at Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, as three students were badly injured after the balcony of their female hostels collapsed on them.

The three students who narrowly escaped death were from the Department of Mass Communication. They were rushed to different hospitals in the city where they are recuperating.

One of the students who gave her name as Oluchi, said, “on Monday, around 10am, I went to the hostel to call my course mate, Amanda, for a lecture that we were supposed to have that morning. When I got to the first floor of the two-storey building, she was washing plates on the balcony. She begged me to wait for her. So, while waiting for her to finish, another student came to the balcony.”

“We were discussing and all of sudden, the balcony, where my friend was washing plates, collapsed. The next thing I knew was that I found myself in this hospital. My friend, Amanda, was taken to the Orthopaedic Hospital, because I was told that she suffered dislocation in her neck and waist

Oluchi also said that some delegates sent by the institution paid her a visit and asked that she be transferred to the institution clinic to enable the institution take up her treatment, as it will not be right for her to receive treatment at a private hospital.

She revealed that she declined because she was not sure that the school clinic would be able to properly handle her case.

Another student who wants to remain anonymous said immediately it happened, they were all moved to another hostel in the institution while the affected hostel was barricaded.

The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Mark Eze, said that there was no official report about the incident to the management.
