WHAT do you think about Governor Obiano’s six years in office?
I wonder if there is anything I will tell the people of Anambra State that they have not experienced themselves; not just heard. We achieved a lot in the first five years. In the last one year leading to the 6th anniversary of the administration, a lot more have been achieved.
For example, between March 21st and March 29th, 2019, St. John’s Secondary and Technical School, Alor, in Idemili South Local Government Area came third in the international festival of states held in Tunisia, involving different countries of the world. Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are some of the key areas countries pay particular attention to.
May I remind you that on the 1st August, 2019, the federal government officially pronounced Anambra State as helping small and medium enterprises more than other states in Nigeria for which reason the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on behalf of the federal government, gave Anambra State the first price at State House, Abuja.
I’m also glad to inform you that on 7th October, 2019, Anambra State became the first place in the whole of Africa, to have what is called the super smart Mobile Surveillance System (MSS) developed by the Cambridge Innovation Centre in Massachusetts. This is the latest technology in the fight against crime and it was used to uncover and arrest the terrorists, who burnt Boston Marathon in April, 2013. At the launch of Operation Kpochapu at Alex Ekwueme Square, on October 7th,2019, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu Abubakar when he was coming, he was expecting something big but he saw something bigger in Anambra State.
During this lunch, more than111 vehicles, most of them manufactured in Anambra State by INNOSON Motors Ltd located in Nnewi were presented to different intelligence and security agencies operating in Anambra State and all the vehicles were well equipped. In addition, there were three durapatcher equipment or machines used for road rehabilitation in all the three zones in the state. We saw the police hold the 13th Biennial Police Games in places like Alex Ekwueme Square, OMA Event Center, Otuocha Stadium, Mbaukwu/Umuawulu NYSC Camp, Tansi International College at Okpuno, near Awka and of course Rojenny stadium and Holiday Resort where most of the event took place. The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu Abubakar declared the 20th Police Games held in Anambra State to be the most colourful and the most successful ever.
I’m glad to report to you that there was no incident whatsoever during the event. May I also add that all the major hotels in Anambra State were fully booked during this period as over 5000 police men, including very senior officers stayed in Anambra. Business analysts estimate that 1.5 billion naira was injected into our state economy for over one week they were here.
We now have Coscharis Rice Mill commissioned on 2nd October, at Otuocha by Governor Willie Obiano, together with the governor of Kebbi State and the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor.
May I also add that on Saturday, October 5th 2019, when the Presidency, the Federal Ministry of Education and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) commemorated the Teachers Day in Nigeria, 24 awards were available for those who have excelled in the promotion of education. Most states didn’t get any award and none of the states which received the awards got more than one, except Anambra State that collected four. It will interest you that of the four vehicles presented by the federal government, Anambra State alone took home two, leaving 35 other states plus the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to share the remaining two.
What other things would you expect the governor to achieve before the end of his tenure?
Getting the airport ready; constructing and building the airport to the stage where it will be ready for flies; for planes to take off and land is the expectations of Ndi Anambra. It’s one of the biggest airports in Nigeria. The runway alone is 4kms, the tower will be 11 stories and this modern airport will be built without a loan.
I also expect the completion and commissioning this year of the International Conference Centre with sitting capacity of 10,000, the largest in Africa. We will be expecting more investors both Mega Investors, small and medium investors. Of course, more roads will be completed, more bridges, hospitals, primary health care centres and so on. (C. Don Adinuba is the Commissioner of Information and Public Enlightenment).
