Three siblings drown in River Niger



… Killed in boat mishap enroute home from school

TEARS flowed freely on the banks of River Niger as three siblings vanished in the water enroute home in a boat.

The boys were victims of a canoe mishap as they headed back from school on Monday afternoon.

According to witnesses, the pupils of Community Secondary School, Atani, in Ogbaru Local Council of Anambra State got drowned on their way home to the Ochuche part of Ogbaru, near Onitsha, where their family reside after the day’s study.

Sources told National Light that the boat in which the lads rowed home, along with two others who survived capsized following turbulent waves after rains.

Spokesman of Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Edwin Okadigbo, told newsmen that the students were declared ‘missing’ on Monday evening in their Ogbaru Divisional Office by members of the community.

The NSCDC informed that their preliminary investigation revealed the identities of the lads whose corpses were yet to be found as all children of one Mr Chukwuemeka of Oroma-Etiti, Anam in Anambra-West Local Council of the state.

The cause of the incident was attributed to river turbulence, following the heavy downpour of March 23, 2020.

Efforts are on-going in the River Niger and adjourning waters to recover the bodies of the deceased. NSCDC Public Relations Officer said that the “efforts are being intensified as the State Commandant, David Bille has also “ordered discreet investigation” of the incident.
