The people of Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Wednesday, smiled home with bags of rice —a stimulus package from the speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. UchennaOkafor, who also represents the constituency in the state house.

This was coming shortly after the Government of Anambra State also commenced distribution of over 35,000 bags of rice to the elderly people in the state, in addition to other stimulus packages.

A brief event organized to mark the distribution of the items held at the speaker’s compound in Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum, and was also used to sensitize the people on the novel coronavirus pandemic, government’s directive against the disease, and other safety tips they needed to be aware of, towards winning the war against COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to National Light on the purpose of the gesture, the speaker said it was aimed at assuaging the effects of the coronavirus lockdown and the ‘Stay at Home, Stay Safe’ directive on his constituents.

He said the exercise was in line with what Governor Willie Obiano is doing at the state level and his call on Ndi Anambra and the stakeholders to assist in fighting coronavirus and its effects on the people of the state.

On his message to Ndi Anambra, the top ranking lawmaker said, “They should listen to what the government is saying about this pandemic and adhere to her directives by washing and sanitizing their hands regularly, avoiding crowded places, handshake, hugging and other such things that can expose them to the risk of contracting this disease.

“Also, people should not go out if they don’t have any tangible reason to go out; and they should regularly listen to government for directive and instruction.”

While thanking God that Anambra has not recorded any case of coronavirus; Rt. Hon. Okafor who is also a member of the state’s committee on COVID-19, further appreciated Governor Obiano for his numerous efforts, palliative measures and stimulus packages so far in the fight against coronavirus, urging others to toe the path.

He also urged those present at the event (which was held in adherence to the state government’s directive on COVID-19) to take the message home and sensitize their family members and neighbours, wishing them a successful Easter celebration ahead.

The climax of the event included the sensitization and the distribution of over one thousand bags of rice to the constituents, mostly the widows, and which was done through the women leaders of all the communities in Ayamelum Local Government Area, which are: Anaku,Omor, Umuerum, Umunbo, Igbakwu, Ifite-Ogwari, Umueje and Omasi.

The beneficiaries appreciated the lawmaker for his kind gesture, and prayed God to replenish and bless him the more.
