Akpo Vigilante leader lauds govt, media over COVID-19 fight

COMMANDER, Akpo Community Vigilance Group, Mr Peter Ezeonu has commended the Anambra State Government and the media over their efforts at checking the spread of Coronavirus pandemic in Anambra.

Ezeonu made the commendation while interacting with the Anambra State Information Officers at his residence, Udo Village, Akpo.

According to the commander, the government of Anambra, under Gov. Willie Obiano has demonstrated a high sense of determination, love and care in stopping the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the state, since the disease arrived in Nigeria.

“Closure of state borders has no doubt been denying the state government huge Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“Civil servants work from home order, closure of markets,  10 per cent personal income tax refund, two months’ recess on levies to motorcycle/tricycle operators must have taken a toll on government revenues.

“Gov. Obiano has not slept with both eyes closed as he brainstorms on how best to manage the stay at home order invoked as part of measures to stop the replication of the virus in the state.

“This is part of the result for an ever changing order from operation of temporary food markets to normal sites within 24 hours,” Ezeonu remarked.

“My prayer is that God shall keep him and infuse in him more wisdom in his efforts, so that no head shall be lost to coronavirus pandemic in Anambra State.

“On the side of the media, I think they have done well with sustained sensitisation programmes.

“The issue of hand washing under running water with soap regularly and thoroughly is common knowledge to many households today.

“Practice of social distancing of about 2 metres apart, avoiding of gatherings of more than 30 persons, suspension of holding of funerals rites, traditional weddings, church programmes are directives that the media has been drumming into the ears of Ndi Anambra.

“I am personally grateful to them; I wish they do not relent as we are set to win in the COVID-19 war,” he pleaded.

Mr Ezeonu, however, noted that it was regrettable that some church proprietors, especially those ones in rented shops/rooms, still operate their church services, even after several meetings with the vigilance group.

“In our meetings, I directed them to keep to government directives for lockdown. I think churches ought to partner government in this war, but in a few cases, the reverse has been the case.

“I do not apply force in stopping them. I will have meetings again with them.”

Ezeonu, then, appealed to people to understand that all that government had been doing was to save lives. “So, in the interest of your life and those of your family members, stop going to church.

“God is ubiquitous. Pray and praise God at home, He will be glorified.”

Ezeonu adds: “we are on top of security situation in Akpo Community. Hunger is no excuse to criminality.

“I am grateful to affluent Ndi Anambra that are ever supporting government with relief items. I wish they do not forget their communities”.
