Covid19 Lockdown : Why Food Vendors Should Be Included In Essential Service Providers — Ibuzo

The Anambra State House of Assembly has inaugurated a 10-man committee called Covid19 Monitoring Team headed by the Deputy Speaker, Rt.Hon.Paschal Agbodike.

The team is to ensure that efforts are being intensified to win the battle against coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking in an interview, the chairman House of Assembly Committee on Environment and member of the Covid19 Monitoring Team, Hon.Edward Obiefuna Ibuzo, said that the Covid19 Monitoring Team, shortly after inauguration, visited quarantine facilities at NYSC camp Amansea Awka-North , Onitsha general hospital as well as Aguleri in Anambra-East local government area.

Ibuzo said that the team was impressed with what they saw on ground at the isolation centres, stressing that from all indications Anambra state is fully prepared to battle the dreaded coronavirus to a standstill.

He said Governor Willie Obiano deserved commendations for the facilities at the isolation centres, noting that the governor really accorded priority attention to the medical and health needs of the citizenry especially at this critical Public health emergency period.

The lawmaker stated that ” we had a coronavirus supervising panel. So we went to Amansea on oversight duty at the newly established Covid19 preventive unit to make sure it is in good stead to withstand any outbreaks. We saw the beds and ventilators were there too.”

” from Amansea, we went to the preventive unit at Onitsha general hospital and thereafter we went to Aguleri. So generally Anambra state is prepared in case of any outbreaks.Let’s congratulate His Excellency for his actions.” the lawmaker pointed out.

He however enjoined citizens of the state to obey governnent directives especially as it concerns wearing face masks , washing of hands and other personal hygiene so that the state can come out of pandemic even as he observed that though the masses are suffering the burden of the total shutdown of activities but he admonished them to be hopeful because the Covid19 crisis is not permanent.

Ibuzo equally drew the attention of the state government to its order on the 2-day commercial activities allocated to vendors who sell food items. He observed that the two days were not enough especially for those who sell perishables, stressing that there was need for the state government to review the order and most probably allow those who deal on food items to operate daily to enable them sell their wares and also reduce crowding and clustering of people in the markets.

According to him ” there is a message from His Excellency that food markets should operate Tuesdays and Fridays. Am not happy about that. Am against it. So I want the governor to review that because there are some people who may not finish selling their tomatoes after Tuesday and before Friday, it will get spoilt because there is no place to preserve it.’

” even if we choose Tuesdays and Fridays, what it means is that markets will be crowded with people on those days because food is a daily event and not a one-off thing. I am of the opinion that food items sellers and food vendors should be included in essential service providers and incentives should be given to them.” Ibuzo maintained.
