Adopt COVID-19 preventive measures – Cleric urges churches

AS WORSHIPPERS jubilate for the lifting of ban on church services in Anambra State, Parish priest, St Joseph Catholic Church, Awkaetiti, Damian Obi has called on people to turn to God.

Speaking to our reporter, Rev. Fr. Obi said that the Almighty God remained the last resort to terminate the Corona virus pandemic ravaging the entire globe, urging people to remember their creator.

He said that worshippers were full of excitement, clapping and glorifying God for being allowed to fellowship together with other brethren, saying that they adhered strictly to recommended preventive measures.

“The archbishop directed us to ensure that all worshippers wear face masks, wash their hands before entering the church, maintain social distance and avoid hand shaking.

“I don’t believe that COVID- 19 is a divine punishment rather it has taught people to turn to God. God is not happy with the death of sinners but wants their repentance.

“People while adhering to preventive measures should call upon their creator just as the Israelites used to do when calamity fell upon them and received deliverance”, said Fr. Obi.

He further advised other Nigerian clergy men who do not believe that the pandemic can kill thereby not adhering to preventive measures to rescind.

“A good shepherd protects his sheep by giving them the right information they should know and being an example their congregation should follow. Let’s be patient until a vaccine emerges”, said Obi.

The cleric thanked the likes of Lucky Adimike, MaduikeEze, MrsNsofor and others who donated food items and cash worth hundreds of thousands of naira distributed as palliatives to the indigents.

Meanwhile, Ide Awkaetiti, Chief Ike Igwe said that government should tighten the porous boarders as a check against COVID- 19 alleging that security agents collect bribe to allow people cross the borders.

“COVID-19 is still real although Anambra State seems to be free.We don’t have enough testing kits. It is not an opportunity for security agents or anyone to make money. Let there be proper border lockdown.

“Government is trying by distributing rice but I suggest that the food be cooked and distributed daily so that those really hungry or indigent can be fed”, said Igwe.
