COVID-19: NCDC announces 2 more molecular test laboratories in Kaduna, Lagos

NIGERIA have acquired two more molecular testing laboratories in the fight against global COVID-19 pandemic.

Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this while fielding questions from newsmen in Abuja today.

According to him, this brings Nigeria’s total number of molecular laboratories in the network to 17.

“However, a critical challenge remains sample collection and transportation to the relevant laboratories, which is still a work in progress. The new testing technology, using the ROCHE COBAS system does not require extraction kits which are in high demand and low supply around the world.

Currently, the kits have not been manufactured for wide use, but NCDC will explore the opportunity base on regulatory approvals, validation and other guidance. Therefore, the agency is focused on working with its partners to quickly activate the use of this technology,” he said.

Ihekweazu added that two private laboratories were now on board, NDA laboratory in Kaduna and the 54-Gene laboratory in Lagos and Ogun States are all private sector laboratories.

Giving an update on the laboratory, Ihekweazu said that the agency was working closely with more private laboratories to expand testing capacity in Nigeria.

It will be recalled that NCDC recently posted information on its Twitter handle that this is part of the laboratory strategy developed.
