SECCIMA plans way out of post COVID-19 economic crisis



DIRECTOR General of South East Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (SECCIMA), Henry Nduka Awuregu has advised Nigerians to be prepared to embrace the economic crisis that will be the aftermath of the COVID -19 pandemic.

  Awuregu, who spoke to our correspondent in an exclusive interview, said that with the economy of the whole world coming to a state of comatose as a result of the pandemic, economic crisis of great magnitude unprecedented in the history of the world would be expected and its effect would be felt more by developing countries like ours.

  He stated that with oil which is Nigeria’s foreign exchange earner plummeting to an all time low, Nigerians should expect a tough but surmountable economic quagmire.

   He explained that the solution to the expected crisis is for the country to start now to plan for survival strategies after the pandemic. According to him, the country’s best brains must gather and brainstorm on way out of the problem.

  The SECCIMA DG stated that the situation at hand calls for collective efforts of Nigerians at home and diaspora devoid of religious, political and ethnic sentiments and considerations.

  He promised that chambers of commerce in the country will play a key role in the post COVID- 19 economic recovery.

  “In the South East for instance, SECCIMA as the engine room of economic development will lead the fight. We will work with the small, medium and large scale industries to bring our economy out of the woods.  

“We will organise seminars and workshops across the zone in conjunction with state governments to fight this expected calamitous effect of the pandemic”

  Awuregu however submitted that the pandemic has its positive effect. According to him, it brought out the doggedness and ingenuity of Nigerians to survive as a people which will bear on our activities after the crisis.
