In Onitsha, face mask row lead to one death



A PRIVATE guard attached to Cocoa Market, Onitsha, has reportedly killed 22-year-old Cletus Chisom at the Cocoa Cola Market, Onitsha, over face mask issues.

  National Light gathered that the incident which occurred in the early hours on Monday, was occasioned by the alleged refusal of the deceased to comply with government directives to wear face mask before entering the market.

  An eye witness account stated that Chisom had an argument with the security guard over the mandatory use of face mask even with the intervention of a third party. In a schuffle that ensued the guard went for a dagger and stabbed the victim.

  “The sister to the deceased was at the market with her mother to make some purchases when the suspect stopped them for failure to put on their face masks. The girl reportedly rushed home and brought her brother  Chisom who confronted the guard. As the altercation continued with the guard, the latter went for a knife and stabbed Chisom on the chest. The mother had earlier purchased the face masks for her daughter and herself”

  Confirming the report, the Anambra  State police image maker, Haruna Mohammed, said the security guard had been arrested while the body of the deceased has been deposited at Toronto Hospital for autopsy.

  According to him, police operatives from Okpoko Division, in Onitsha, arrested a private guard, one Ibuchi Nwoju, male, aged 26yrs of Asa village, Abia State, but resides in Onitsha, Anambra State.

 He stated that Nwoju had an altercation with the deceased Chisom of Ekekere Street, Awada, and stabbed him with a knife in his chest.

  “The victim became unconscious and was rushed to Good News Hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor. The corpse was deposited at Toronto Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.

  He stated that the commissioner of police, John Abang has ordered immediate transfer of the case to state CID Awka, for discreet investigation.
