Anambra suspends Egwu Imo Awka Festival

ANAMBRA State Government has suspended the 2020 edition of annual Egwu Imo Awka cultural Festival.

 The suspension was conveyed in a release issued yesterday by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu.

According to Chukwulobelu, the festival was suspended in observance of the prevailing federal government curfew, Anambra order on public gatherings, World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols on COVID-19 and Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines on preventing the spread of the pandemic.

Chukwulobelu further explained that the suspension also extends to other cultural festivals in Anambra State, and charged traditional rulers, presidents-general, custodians and organisers of such festivals to enforce and obey the suspension order.

The security agencies are hereby directed to strictly enforce the suspension order. “The security agencies are hereby directed to strictly enforce the suspension order.”

Those that violate the order, he warned, will be held responsible should the festivals go ahead.

The release also advised members of the public not to attend such festivals, but to stay at home and go about their business observing COVID-19 guidelines previously issued by the federal and state governments.
