OFFICERS of the Nigerian Naval Out Post, Odekpe, near Onitsha, last weekend, allegedly demolished criminal hide-outs in a bid at flushing-out miscreants who dispossess unsuspecting members of the public of their belongings around the pedestrian bridge located at the busy Onitsha/Asaba Express way, Uga Junction, Onitsha.

National Light gathered that some of the miscreants whose structures were demolished were suspected to have disguised as genuine petty traders operating under the pedestrian bridge during the day, but use the cover of darkness to perpetrate their evil activities at night.

Uga Junction had recently been exposed as a criminal hide-out even as the security outfit who in conjunction with Operation Clean and  Healthy Anambra (Ocha Brigade), a state-owned paramilitary organisation demolished make-shift structures erected under the bridge which served as criminal hide-out for hoodlums operating in the area.

We gathered further that criminal activities were also said to have been on the increase within the vicinity due to cluster of business activities around the pedestrian bridge which include; Onitsha Drugs Market, Tools, Carpenters and Allied Products Markets, Iron Rod Markets,  among other business ventures in the area.

Street trading and commercial transportation have also constituted environmental nuisance in and around the vicinity until the recent intervention of Navy Personnel who engaged transport operators in meaningful negotiations that resulted to the end of frequent traffic congestion along Atani Road and adjoining roads.

When Nation Light visited the area, it was, however, discovered that all the make-shift business shelters were all gone, while motorists plying Atani Road and adjoining neighborhoods were experiencing smooth and uninterrupted vehicular movement.

Commander, Odekpe Naval Out-Post, Navy Captain Ali Abdu said the action was in line with Naval routine operation to assist the conventional security agencies in flushing out criminals from the society as well as making sure that people with criminal intentions do not take advantage of the business activities under the bridge to carry out their criminal targets as well as maintaining the social distancing against the coronavirus Pandemic.
