Anambra, Delta police partner on border closure enforcement

COMMISSIONERS of Police in Anambra and Delta States, Messrs John Abang and Hafiz Muhammad, in company of officers of the Commands, have visited Bridge head, Onitsha, to decongest the bridge, ensure free movement of only essential goods and service providers, as well as enforce strict compliance of the ban on movement across State boundaries, which the State Government directed, as part of measures to contain the spread the Coronavirus.

While addressing newsmen at the Bridge head Onitsha, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abang, said the step was taken in the overall interest of the public, urging people to endure attendant hardships pending a review of the directives, adding that measures are being put in place to ensure that security men manning the boundaries do not compromise.

His Delta State counterpart, Mr. Muhammad said Police in the State will collaborate with those in Anambra to ensure that people do not lack essential goods and services, even as movements across States boundaries are restricted.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Mr Sam Onwuteaka, who was at the bridge with his men enforcing the ban, said their efforts have been yielding positive results, especially with the interception of trucks loaded with passengers in the wee hours of the day, which were usually denied entrance into the State.

Some passersby who spoke to the ABS, including Messrs Ifeanyi Asogwa, Livinus Ejezie and Miss Ifeoma Okolo, though acknowledged that preventive measures outlined by the government are in the interest of the masses said the ban on movement of people across State boundaries is negatively affecting businesses and daily lives as most traders in Onitsha live in Delta State, calling for a better measure in containing the spread of the virus and ensuring that people do not die of hunger.
