Anambra mulls disclosure of defaulting road contractors

THE Chairman Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Works,  Timothy Ifedioramma has said that the state’s Assembly will in no distant time publish names of erring road contractors in the state.

Ifedioramma said it had become very necessary to take such drastic measure to clampdown on contractors whose stock-in-trade were execution of shoddy road projects in Anambra despite being mobilised by the state government.

The Works Committee Chairman, who disclosed this plan to our correspondent at the legislative complex, Awka, stated that although Anambra roads were still work-in-progress,  frowned at the deplorable conditions of the roads due to poor executions.

According to him,” the roads are work-in-progress and you know there is no particular governnent that can do all the roads given the space of time that is allowed to them.

Yes, the rains are approaching but unfortunately, part of the problem this year is this issue of COVID-19 pandemic. It has really slowed alot of things down and unfortunately it is now leading us into the rains when the roads may not be given the kind of accelerated attention that it requires.

“But having said that, I as the House Committee Chairman on Works, am on the neck of both the government and the construction companies that are on some of these roads. I almost go on a daily supervision and oversight functions on some of these roads and we do issue reports and recommendations where necessary,” the lawmaker emphasised.

Ifedioramma, however, maintained that the truth of the matter was that the state was working on the roads and that in no distant time, there will be a feel of ease for citizens even though he pointed out that the only unfortunate thing was that the coronavirus pandemic has taken both the state and federal government aback for more than four months.

According to him , some of the contractors were doing well while some were not. He said,  “we are taking note and I will come on press to expose the serious construction companies and those other companies that are doing shoddy deals when they are giving work.”
