Finally, Orji Kalu out of prison



SENATOR Orji Uzo Kalu has been released from prison in compliance with Supreme Court decision delivered on May 8, 2020.

  According to sources close to the former governor, Kalu returned to his Abuja residence yesterday evening having fulfilled all conditions for his release.

A Federal High Court in Lagos, had on Tuesday, granted a motion seeking his release from the Kuje Prison custody.

  Justice Mohammed Liman, before whom the applicant’s motion was pending, granted the prayer of the applicant and ordered the release of  the former Abia State governor.

Kalu was sentenced to 12 years for a N7.2 billion fraud in a verdict handed down by Justice Mohammed Idris on December 5, 2019.

  His co-defendant, Jones Udeogo also bagged a 10-year jail term in the trial.

  Following the nullification of his conviction by the Supreme Court, the former governor filed an application at the federal court seeking an order for his release from the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kuje, Abuja.
