Nobody Has Monopoly Of Violence, Abba Indigenes Tell Police, Arthur Eze

… We Are Not Cowards

Abba community in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state has accused the Nigeria Police of a grand conspiracy to exterminate the entire community from the surface of the earth judging from its role in the Ukpo-Abba land tussle saga.

Indigenes of the aforestated community who embarked on a peaceful protest to the Anambra State House of Assembly Awka yesterday to make their plight known to the lawmakers, alleged that the police is playing to the gallery as evident in its role in the destruction of Best Aluminum property in the community. They claimed that the police has displayed a high-level of unreserved bias in the Ukpo-Abba land crisis.

One of the protesters Mrs.Ngozi Obi-Chukwuma said , ” the police involvement in this matter is nothing to write home about. From June 19th last year till now, the police have shown unreserved bias against Abba community. As I speak with you now, two of Abba Indigenes are still in prison custody and what is their offence because they are from Abba.

” It has come to a level that a teacher who was returning home was arrested by men of SARS, took him to their Awkuzu office and invited Arthur Eze’s chief thug Mr.Andrew Umeadili to come and confirm whether to detain him or release him. This same Andrew Umeadili moves around in an unmarked white Sienna car, carries thugs around, molest our women when they go to farm. This is a case that is already in a court of competent jurisdiction.

” the day they destroyed the perimeter fencing of Best Aluminum and that of his brother, they came with three trucks of police men and the police was giving them cover to destroy the properties of the Nwekes on the condition that they were implementing a court order.

” On 19th of June last year, on Oye market day, we came down to our market and what did we see, police men everywhere and the women were teargassed by the police and their wares destroyed. Some of us were arrested and detained including myself. So somebody should please ask the IG of police , what is the involvement of the police in the Abba-Ukpo land matter.

” We know they have hired the police to deal with us but then , no man has monopoly of violence. I will tell you that every human being has some elements of madness in the person. We are only towing the line of peace but we are not cowards.” Obi-Chukwuma thundered.

She further disclosed that Abba community request the Anambra State Government to release the White Paper on the panel set to profer amicable resolution to the matter, noting that the white paper has cleared defined who owns the land in dispute.

Another woman who was part of the protest Mrs.Bridget Okeke, aged 60 and hails from Ezi-Abba in Abba community alleged that Prince Arthur Eze has taken over the only market where they sold their wares to feed their children and families.

Mrs.Okeke who spoke in vernacular said, ” Arthur no wan make we rest. Arthur don take our market. E no gree make we go market again.E don take our land. E no wan make we dey alive again. E don sell our market. Even the land wey we dey plant cassava, dey plant wetin we take dey train our children, e no gree again. We come beg governor make e help us because we no no wetin we go do again. I get seven children and na only me dey cater for them because my husband don die.”

Hon.Obinna Chukwuma who led the protest to the state assembly complex Awka , said they came to the state house of assembly on a peaceful protest to present their grievances concerning the ordeals Abba community has been going through since June 19th ,2019.

Chukwuma explained that Abba community has been under siege since June last year. That their women could no longer go to farm at Agu-Abba and that the popular Oye-Abba market at Abba junction along Enugu-Onitsha expressway was destroyed and pulled down. He also said that the perimeter fencing of community secondary school Abba was pulled down.

According to him , ” all this while we have been crying to the state government to come to our aid, up till no reaction. But what prompted our coming was that about two weeks ago bulldozers moved into our community and started pulling down houses that were built 40 years ago under the cover of the Nigeria Police. What we are asking is , is Abba community in dispute with police or Ukpo and Ukwulu communites ?

” This is a matter that is in court, according to the statement of the supreme court on February 15th 2019. Instead of responding legally, they turned againtst us and started using the police to intimidate us. As we speak about 24 members of Abba community are in various jails. I personally have been to SARS twice. I have been to State CID once for no offence but just because am from Abba community. So we questioning the neutrality of the Nigeria Police in the whole issue.

” We are here because we know the state house of assembly is the second arm of government. We are here to plead with you people to please take our grievances to them; we are asking the state government to come and save us because the point we are now, we don’t know what will happen next.

” It might get to a point where you are sleeping in your house and bulldozers will crush you to death. So we don’t know if we are still part of Anambra state. The state government set up a panel of enquiry led by retired justice Anigbogu and they have submitted their report. So we are asking, what is holding the white paper?

Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly Rt.Hon.Uche Okafor however appealed to Abba community to maintain peace, asking them not to resort to jungle justice. He said the peaceful protest to the state assembly was a good move because it showed that there were law-abiding citizens.

The Speaker said, ” our primary responsibility as enshrined in the constitution of this land is effective representation. Our promise therefore is that these cries and concerns of Abba community as contained in the white paper given to me by you all, will get to the state government immediately.

” Please let’s not take laws into our hands because Anambra has remained the safest state in the country and we appreciate the governor who has ensured that the peace we experience in this state is being maintained. Please be patient because governnent will definitely find a lasting solution to it and all parties involved will go home peacefully.”
