Media practitioners search for missing National Light journalist, Onwuasoanya

A JOURNALIST with the Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation (ANPC), publishers of National Light, Ka O Di Taa (Igbo newspaper), and Sportslight Xtra newspapers, Mathew Onwuasoanya has been reported missing.

  Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Emma Ifesinachi, and secretary, Emma Udeagha disclosed this in a statement issued after the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, Chuka Nnabuife informed them that the journalist has been missing since May 30, 2020, at a stakeholders’ meeting yesterday.

In a mail sent to the chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Emma Ifesinachi, Nnabuife disclosed that the journalist has been missing since May 30, 2020.

According to him, “please there is a serious matter in our hands here in Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation (ANPC): One of our (National Light Newspaper’s) reporters, Barrister Mathew Onwuasoanya, Male, fair in complexion, aged 49, personal telephone numbers, 07086738854 and 07032770194 has not been seen neither in office nor at his residence in Ngodo, Nise, Awka South Local Government Area since the night of Friday, 29th May, 2020.

“We have been expecting him at work until his only brother, Mr Oliver Onwuasoanya, arrived our office on Monday, June 8, 2020 and told us they are searching for him.

“Thereafter, we commenced action on search for him. His brother has lodged complaints to police…

It was learnt from his neighbours that “at about 2am on May 30, some vehicles, comprising a white Hilux truck and a Highlander with some gun-bearing men dressed in what looks like security men’s uniform came and whisked him away. ..”

Sir Chuka , described Mr Onwuasoanya  as very active and resourceful noting that the development if not tackled, may live a big dent on the image of media practice.

Mr. Onwuasoanya, who is also a lawyer, is an indigene of Awba-Ofemili in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
