BRITISH announcement of a cheap and widely available drug known as Dexamethasone as effective in saving patients who are seriously down with COVID-19 has drawn World Health Organisations reaction.

Sequel to a statement released yesterday through WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the Body (WHO) would look into the full data analysis of the study in the coming days to ascertain the authenticity of the claims; it today announced that it welcomes the drug in line with findings about the drug.

Findings from the trial led by a team from Oxford University reported that the low-cost steroid cut the risk of death by about one third for patients requiring only oxygen and by about one fifth for those on oxygen.

“This is great news and I congratulate the Government of the UK, the University of Oxford, and the many hospitals and patients in the UK who have contributed to this life-saving scientific breakthrough.”

“This is the first treatment shown to reduce mortality in patients with COVID-19 requiring oxygen or ventilator support,” Ghebreyesus said.

According to the WHO, dexamethasone is a steroid that has been used since the 1960s to reduce inflammation in a range of conditions, including inflammatory disorders and certain cancers. The drug has been listed on the   WHO Model List of Essential Medicines since 1977 in multiple formulations and is currently off-patent and affordably available in most countries.

The UN health agency said the researchers have shared initial insights about the results of the trial with them and they are looking forward to the full data analysis in the coming days, adding that it will coordinate a meta-analysis to increase their overall understanding of this intervention.

Till date, there has been no effective treatment or vaccine for the coronavirus which has claimed nearly 440,000 lives across the world.

This follows fulfillment of WHO’s promises of a coordinated meta-analysis for a better understanding of the intervention.
