Nigerian scientists claim discovery of COVID-19 drug

SCIENTITS, under the ages of COVID-19 Research Group, Friday, announced that they have discovered COVID-19 vaccine.

The university scientists, while making the disclosure, said the vaccine was being developed locally in Africa for Africans but would also work for other continents when unveiled

 According to the leader of the team, Oladipo Kolawole, it would take a minimum of 18 months for the vaccine to be unveiled to the public. This is because a lot of analysis and studies, as well as approvals by medical authorities were still required.

  They disclosed that N7.8 million was spent on the study that led to the discovery of the vaccine and that it will take a minimum of 18 months for the vaccine to be unveiled to the public

In a related development, Plateau State Research Committee on COVID 19 and Other Infectious Diseases has identified 13 plants that have shown possible antiviral activities against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS COV 2 ).

  The Lead Researcher and Team Chairman, Prof Noel Wannang , while addressing mewsmen in Jos, said that 10 of the plants have been selected based on Pharmacokinetic Parameters of their Phytochemical Constituents ,and formulated into 3 cocktails (COV- Pla 1, CovidPla 2 and CovPla 3 ) .

According to him, ” I am happy to inform the public that drug treatment trials on COVID-19 patients will commence soon. The outcome of the trail will be made public and shall be published in line with best international practices.”

  He maintained that as part of its attempts to find lasting solution to infectious disease, the committee has initiated strategies to collaborate with other partners to bring succor to the state in terms of improvement of health facilities.

  He said that the committee had identified preventive strategies for the COVID-19 and other infectious disease on the Plateau, cautioning on the potential dangers of misinformation from the social media which has unfortunately taken the center stage.

  Wannang further disclosed that committee has also developed protocol for the management of COVID-19 patients using conventional medicines, adding that the repurposed drugs cover for Asymptomatic carriers , mild / moderate disease patients ,elderly patients ,patients with cardiovascular morbidities ,patients presenting with severe disease ,patients in shock and critically severe disease .

  The protocols, he said, would be submitted to the necessary authorities for immediate implementation for fear of self medication and drug misuse.
