Parliament urges CDC to seek cheaper, local COVID-19 medicines

A PARLIAMENTARY panel in India  has called on senior government officials to promote cheaper and easily available locally-made medicines for  COVID-19, check recommendations and cap prices of expensive medicines pushed by pharma companies.

  In a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs meeting, members demanded that apart from sourcing local content in COVID-19 medicine, the maximum price of the drugs should be capped.

  According to sources,  the committee members questioned why expensive medicines were often being recommended for COVID-19 treatment while expressing concerns over black marketing of medicines.

Naming three cheaper and easily available medicines, the committee questioned why they are not being promoted despite being equally effective.

  The meeting which deliberated on the preferred COVID-19 medical  option had Home Secretary, Ajay Bhalla, Joint Secretary in Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal and other officials and chaired by Congress leader, Anand Sharma.
