FORMER Nigerian Bar Association, Onitsha Branch, Chairman, Chidi Henry Onyiuke has lauded some state governors who tested COVID -19 positive for their openness, saying that it has made Nigerians believe that COVID- 19 was real and not a death sentence.

Speaking to newsmen in his chambers at Onitsha, Onyiuke also commended the federal and state government for lifting the interstate lockdown, saying that it did not achieve much because of alleged negligence cum abuse of the directive by security agents at the borders.

“I must commend the openness of the state governors like Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo, Seyi Makinde and Nasir Ahmed El Rufai of Oyo and Kaduna, respectively. At least, people will know that COVID -19 is not a myth and not a death sentence. People should embrace the test and build their immune system”, he said.

“People doubt the existence of the pandemic in Nigeria because of lack of trust on the leadership and no accountability on how the COVID -19 funds were utilised but we should adhere to the preventive measures.

The legal luminary further lamented the wanton and indiscriminate arrest of unsuspecting citizens by both uniformed and faceless agents in the name of enforcing curfew and the use of facemasks, respectively.

“Lifting the lockdown is commendable. It didn’t achieve much. It was abused by security personnel. Even the curfew which was meant to limit movements is no longer necessary.

“It is only in Nigeria that you see people with different colors of uniforms enforcing government policies. It is failure on the leadership to churn out rules they cannot follow up appropriately thereby encouraging hooliganism and violence.

“There should be mobile courts to prosecute facemask defaulters; not some group of unidentified persons taking up the role of arrest, prosecutor, jury and executioner”, said Onyiuke.
