Bloodbath: 14 killed in Kogi, 4 cops gunned down in Ebonyi



… 13 in Kogi casualty from one family

UNKNOWN gun men yesterday afternoon, attacked a bullion van in Ebonyi State and killed four policemen on escorting duty with the vehicle.

  The gunmen tried to intercept the bullion van at Ezzamgbo Junction in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state while the  vehicle was conveying money from Enugu to Abakaliki.

  Eye witnesses said the bandits first fired at the vehicle escorting the van carrying the policemen in a bid to intercept the van and cart the money, with four officers being killed in the process while two sustained serious injuries.

  But the robbers were not able to loot the van as the driver managed to out manouvre the van out of the area.

  Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, Philip Maku confirmed the incident, adding that the robbers trailed the van from Enugu State.

  “They damaged one of the tires of the bullion van but the driver was able to escape with the van. They could not give chase to the van as the driver was driving towards the military checkpoint ahead. The two injured Policemen have been taken to hospital for treatment while the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary. Police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers,” he said.

   In another incident, 13 members of the same family were yesterday killed by suspected gun men in an early morning attack in Agudu.

  The community is located in Bassa-Kogi-Kotonkarfe L.G.A of Kogi State.

  Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Ede Ayuba, confirmed the on telephone.

  According to him, another person was also killed while six persons who sustained varying degree of injuries were evacuated to medical facilities.

  Ayuba stated that on receiving the distress call, he immediately moved to the scene but the bandits had left the scene before their arrival, adding that calm has however, been restored to the area.

  He noted the attack could have been triggered by an alleged long communal dispute in the community but described it as unfortunate “for a man to lose his life and that of 12 members of his immediate family leaving a son.

  Ayuba also disclosed that the killers of the owner of a popular supermarket in Lokoja, Innocent Ofodile, who was killed along the Lokoja-Abuja highway have been arrested.
