Lawyers protest detention of member, violation of court order by IGP police team

Legal practioners  under the aegies of the  Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Onitsha  branch has  sent a protest memo  to the Inspector General Police,  Mr. Adamu Mohammed over a recent arrest and detention of its member Mr. Hilary  Chukwuemeka Asiegbu and confiscation of his two cars by personnel of lnspector-  General Of Police monitoring team on  trumped up charges instigated by a China based  businessman , Chief Ignatius Okonkwo over a civil land matter.

 The association urged the police boss to immediately order the release of the lawyer in compliance with the court order granting  him bail.

  Issuing the protest through a communiqué released after an emergency meeting of the branch held at Onitsha Bar Centre, High Court premises Onitsha, Mr. Steve Onyechi Ononye and Mr. Frank Ibechukwu,  chairman and secretary respectively on behalf of the union noted that it’s regrettable to the union that despite a valid court order which was issued by  Justice Sylvester Odili of the  Anambra State High Court, ordering that the said Mr. Hilary Chukwuemeka Asiegbu should be brought to court and the eventual bail granted to him by the court that they are surprised that the police should go on to arrest their member despite an existing judgment which has already granted him bail which was made available to the police as they were duly  served during the court proceeding.

  Describing such development as impunity at its peak as well as gross violation of a citizen’s right, the  body urged the Inspector- General of Police to immediately direct his men “IGP monitoring team” to unconditionally  and in compliance with the order of court release their member  as well as release his two cars that were illegally confiscated and taken to Abuja, just as they vowed that no amount of intimidation will  prevent them from fighting for the maintenance of the rule of law in the country , especially Anambra State.
