Osun imposes N250,000 fine on hotels, bars violating COVID-19 rules



OSUN State Government said that beginning from today, hotels, bars and clubs found to have disregarded COVID-19 protocols will be liable to N250,000 fine.

Deputy Governor and Chairman of Osun State COVID-19 Task Force, Benedict Alabi, made the announcement yesterday.

According to him, some individuals and institutions should be blamed for the spread of coronavirus through flagrant disregard for government’s guidelines.

“From Monday, August 3, 2020, the Osun State Government will begin enforcement of stronger punitive measures which will include the deployment of mobile courts, imposition of fines on defaulters  and stringent enforcement exercises by the joint task force. Hotels, clubs and bars that flout COVID-19 safety protocols shall be closed and fined N250,000 before they can be reopened. Defaulting worship centres shall be closed and fined N100,000 before they can reopen. Private Hospitals caught treating COVID-19 patients shall have their establishments shut and the owners’ practising licence withdrawn,” the statement read in part.

The Coordinator, Ekiti State COVID-19 Task Force, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, said on Sunday that men of the Ekiti State Task Force on COVID-19 shut down a popular hotel in Ado Ekiti on Saturday for violating government’s regulations.

Aluko said the task force acted on a tip-off that the hotel contravened government’s regulations limiting gathering to 20 persons, adding that the hotel also violated the total lockdown of the state on Saturdays and Sundays.

The coordinator, who spoke in Ado Ekiti, cautioned residents of the state, especially owners of relaxation centres, against violating the COVID-19 regulations.

Aluko said, “We got a report that a wide and an elaborate wedding party was being held in the hotel on Ilawe Road and we swung into action. We sent security operatives to go there and check and when the team went to check, they saw a large crowd of people in the hotel eating and drinking.”

Sources said wedding guests at the elaborate wedding party fled to evade being arrested by the operatives.

The arrival of the task force team was said to have brought the wedding to an abrupt end
