FURY and bloodbath marked the botched election of the Enugu State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) yesterday. The event turned bloody, with some members sustaining various degrees of injuries following disputes over modalities.

The furore allegedly erupted after some doctors from ESUT Park Lane were denied voting because of non-payment of requisite dues.

Some members of the association who gathered at the Michael Okpara Square for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the election of new executive of the association for the next two years, were seriously injured by over 30 thugs who invaded the venue who moved into the polling booths to make away with ballot boxes.

Eyewitnesses said that the thugs came with dangerous weapons while voting was going on and started destroying chairs, tables and canopies being used for the election. They also upturned the ballot boxes and pounced on members of the electoral committee, making the arena to be rowdy which led the doctors to run for their lives. It was at that point that some members sustained injuries while trying to escape from the thugs. Even the policemen deployed to maintain peace at the venue had difficulty bringing the situation under control.

NMA chairman in Enugu State, Dr. Ike Okwesili, were beaten and wounded.

It will be recalled that a faction of the association recently announced the suspension of the Dr. Okwesili, alleging gross misconduct and abuse of office against him. They subsequently appointed one of the Deputy Vice-Chairmen of NMA in Enugu East, Dr. Kinsley Ugwuonye, as Acting Chairman.
