Hit-and-run driver crushes woman in O’sha

A YET-TO-BE-IDENTIFIED woman was yesterday crushed to death by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway at Okpoko junction in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

  Eyewitnesses said driver of the vehicle, who was on high speed, fled after knocking the woman down.

  Anambra State Sector Public Education Officer of Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Pascal Anigbo who confirmed the incident, said the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital by her parents before rescue team from Upper Iweka Unit Command arrived the scene.

  It was at the hospital that doctors confirmed her dead while her corpse was deposited at the morgue in the same hospital.

  Anigbo also disclosed that 10 persons seriously injured in another accident along Ihiala-Onitsha Expressway.

  According to him, the Ihiala road crash involved a Toyota Hiace with number CAL15XJ and an Actros Tanker with registration number FGG176YU that collided near KM Filling Station.

  “A total of 15 people (six male adults and nine female adults) were involved. Ten victims (four males and six females) sustained various degrees of injuries. No death recorded.

  The injured victims were rushed to our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Ihiala, by FRSC rescue team from Ihiala Unit Command. Obstructions have been cleared and normal traffic flow ensured.“edestrians must endeavour to always use pedestrian bridges, to avoid being knocked down by vehicles plying the expressway.

Drivers should always drive with common sense speed limits so that they can easily control their vehicles, in the event of any emergency. A maximum speed limit of 50km/hr is recommended for cars, within built-up areas,” he said.
