Anambra, encouraging excellence in education

BEFORE the creation of Anambra State, men from the state were referred as drop out traders. Then, there was low male enrolment in schools. Today, many families insist that their male children must to go school. Therefore, it is a thing of joy to say that there have been remarkable achievements in the areas of education, amongst others. The state has maintained its status as the Light of the Nation with the students at the secondary school level winning awards both at the national and international levels.

  Anambra State has emerged champions in both JAMB and WAEC for many times. From the year 2015 to date, it has been ranked second in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) states performance.

  In 2015, a mathematics teacher, Mrs. Rose Nkemdilim won the best Nigerian Teacher Contest, while in 2016, the state’s contingent took third position in an international school debate in South Korea. Meanwhile in 2017, an Anambra teacher,  Mr  Clement Okodo of  Abagana Central  School, ranked the best teacher  in Nigeria.

  In 2018 six girls from Regina Pacis Secondary School, Onitsha represented the nation in the world Technovation competition held in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, USA returned with gold medical. The victorious girls were: Promise Nnalue, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo, Vivivan Okoye, Jessica Osita and Miracle Igboke. While the applause was still loud, Loretto Special Science School, Adazi Nnukwu won first position in a national Secondary School assessment.

  Miss Ego Madufokwa of Ihiala is the best candidate in the 2020 University Tetiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with outstanding score of 365 while the position also goes to Anambra indigene.

  July this year, 2020, Anambra State government rejoiced with Professor Charles Egbu of Abatete on his remarkable appointment as Vice Chancellor of Leads Trinity University, U.S.A.

  Teachers are being motivated to deliver their job in so many ways. Teachers ICT compliance rate now stands high with the one teacher, one laptop policy introduced in 2015. 28 technical school teachers were sponsored to Singapore for an upliftment and exposure on technical and vocational education in the year, 2017.

 The state government for now, runs at least four strands of scholarships. While Physically challenged children gain free tuition studies, students in the junior classes of technical schools are exempted from paying school fees. N30m Scholarship has been awarded to 100 indigent students selected from Anambra West, Awka North, Ogbaru and Ayamelum Local Government Areas.

  Also, the six Technovation medalists are on scholarship up to first degree placed in trust with the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha.

  With these, it is clear that Anambra State has achieved greatly in education sector, as Governor Obiano leads it to a brighter future.  Many platforms were on course to see that when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. For instance, it is noticed that teachers posted to the rural areas reject such postings, therefore creating artificial scarcity of teachers in those hard to reach areas.

This behavior has adversely affected the vision of education moulders in the state. In order to get this problem rooted out, government of the state mapped out measures to entice teachers to these rural areas. Incentives were added to the emoluments of teachers who accept posting to these zones.

To further enhance the standard of education in the state, teachers who teach special subjects such as Igbo Language and others were given mouthwatering offers as compensation at the end of the month.

Yes, as witnessed in recent past, salaries of not only teachers, but all workers of the state are constantly paid and on time.

  Furthermore, teachers receive trainings and retrainings to bring them at par with the global best practices.

  Special centres were ruled out and abolished entirely while school children were encouraged to aim at excellence.

Equally, government set aside Wednesdays as special days to encourage Igbo language and culture through Igbo speaking and putting on known Igbo attires.

  School children of the state were encouraged to live above fear, especially fear of race, colour , language or religion and that has been fingered as the secret behind Anambra State Debate champions team success in their successful outing in Singapore.
