ASWAMA, others observe environmental cleanup



ANAMBRA State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) in collaboration with other organisations, Saturday, actively observed the August environmental sanitation exercise, particularly in Okpuno, in Awka South Local Government of the state.

The cleanup exercise attracted members from National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, Red Cross Society of Nigeria, Rotary club, Man O’ War, Scout, Peace Corps African Cleanup Initiative, Environmental Ethics and Safety, Nigeria Girl Guide Association, Nigeria Scout Association, Royal Ranger, residents in Okpuno, among others, who were seen working tirelessly to ensure the environment is clean and healthy for living.

Speaking shortly after the cleanup exercise, the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Amechi Akorah, noted that apart from the monthly sanitation exercise across the state, the authority also usually embarks on sanitation outreach in every two weeks, where a community is selected to clean up their environment in concert with the people, of which Okpuno community was chosen and a number of undesignated dumpsites were discovered and cleaned up by the team and youths of the town.

Amechi while disclosing that the authority will continue further negotiations with the leader of the community towards ensuring that those areas are eliminated and also institute designated liter point in some locations in the community to facilitate easy evacuation of waste in the area, expressed that the turnout of people who participated in the exercise was commendable as members of the  community came out in their numbers to work together with various organisations during the sanitation exercise

“People responded well. Tthey were bringing out wastes from their various homes and we asked them to clean their surroundings and they were complying. it was indeed a successful exercise today”

He also used the opportunity to call on individuals, voluntary organisations, corporate bodies and ndi Anambra at large to cue in to the upcoming ‘Five Million Plastic Challenge’ organised by Guinness World Record and a professional nonprofit organisation; Humanity Nigeria, to pick five million plastic wastes off the streets, gutters, canals of Nigeria as a whole, where all the 36 states will be participating. “ ASWAMA has registered Anambra State to participate in the programme and with target of picking at least one million plastic bottles out of the five million challenge come September 26 , 2020”

The Chairman of Iruofia Village in Okpuno, Robinson Nzekwe while appreciating the authority and various teams for their concern in keeping the environment clean, described the project as a laudable and impressive action.
