NUPPPPROW visits ANPC, lauds management, Obiano on workers’ welfare

ANAMBRA State has been described as a model and exemplary state that others look up to in terms of publicity, workers’ welfare and quality project execution.

The National President of National Union of Printing, Publishing and Paper Products Workers (NUPPPPROW), John Ushie disclosed this in Awka, the Anambra State Capital, when he led some members of the union to  Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation (ANPC) on a courtesy call.

The president appreciated Governor Willie Obiano for his pro-workers governance as well as his laudable efforts in clearing outstanding pensions, allowances and gratuities of the retired civil servants in the state, and appreciated the management of ANPC for doing well in ensuring improved working condition for workers.

On the purpose of the visit, he said, “we came to familiarise with our members and the management of this institution to see how you are going. It is our duty and one of the campaign promises we made in 2018 —that we shall visit all our branches across the country.

While disclosing that Nigeria spends billions of naira every year to bring in printed materials, Comrade Ushie, who described printing as a very lucrative venture, however, decried the unjustifiable high cost of printing in Nigeria, which he attributed to heavy taxes imposed on imported printing raw materials, even as he called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take an urgent step towards reducing such heavy taxes especially on raw materials for printing, to encourage local printing.

Responding, the MD/CEO of the Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, Chuka Nnabuife, appreciated the union for coming to familiarise with the organisation, and reassured of the organisation’s openness to partnership and collaborations.

Sir Nnabuife noted that ANPC was the sole print medium of the Anambra State Government and in fact, the longest-thriving state-owned newspaper in the country, as well as the best newspaper in the South-Eastern region, both in content and in packaging.

On the organisation’s workers welfare, Nnabuife highlighted some of the efforts made so far to ensure improved staff welfare and working condition in the institution, and disclosed that the firm owes no leave allowances since he joined the organisation in 2014 till date, except the ones owed before he came in, a greater portion of which has also been cleared to the year 2009, and still counting.

He gave the credit to Governor Willie Obiano who he also noted, did not only revamp, revolutionise and modernise the two government-owned media industries in the state (the ANPC and the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), but also holds the welfare of the institutions’ staff to a high esteem, by ensuring that they all (both active and retired staff) get what is due to them.

Contributing, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Pensioners in ANPC, Chief ABC Ubani (JP) appreciated Governor Willie Obiano, who he said, on Friday, June 2, 2017, approved the payment of pensions and gratuities of ANPC workers for over 25 years, since 1992 till date, which he said, no government has ever done in the past, since the history of the state.

In a vote of thanks, a Board Member of the ANPC and ABS, who also doubles as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Creative Media, Chief Bob-Manuel Udokwu, appreciated the union for their apt visit to ANPC and urged them never to relent in their efforts in protecting and promoting the interest and welfare of their members nationwide.
