Mike Tyson admits: Wife responsible for return to boxing

AS RETIRED Mike Tyson’s return to the ring draws closer, the boxing legend reveals the reason behind his return.

  Tyson opened up in an interview, “I was discussing with my wife, something about me being overweight, and she said ‘why don’t you just get on the treadmill for 15 minutes a day’ and it went from 15 minutes to two hours”, Tyson said “I was complaining about my weight and so, I guess I tried on some clothes and it was disastrous, so I was worried about my weight.”

  The former Heavyweight champion added that as he started losing weight, ideas for fighting for “30 or 40 million dollars” were floated. While he wanted to dismiss them, it became an interesting prospect.

  “Who would they like me to fight? It’s Bob Sapp,” the 54-year-old continued. “So I’m saying to myself, I know Bob and I said hold, one minute, how would they like me to fight? Can I fight under Queensberry rules? The guy said yes and I said yes, I’ll fight him.” 

  Tyson reigned as the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990 and was the first heavyweight boxer to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles, as well as the only heavyweight to successively unify them. Claiming his first belt at 20 years, four months, and 22 days old, Tyson holds the record as the youngest boxer to win a heavyweight title.

  Tyson who is 54 and Jones, 51 – who have a combined age of105 will compete in an eight-round clash in California.

  The ageing pair will wear larger gloves than regular pros but will not wear head gear.

  Judges will be there to score the clash and a belt will be awarded to the winner.

  Nick named Iron Mike, he is expected to fight Jones Jr on November 28 but revealed getting back into fighting shape was not an easy task.
