In Delta, Police brutality continues as cops smash driver’s head over N200 bribe



AS members of the public are still recounting their ordeal in the hands of overzealous police operatives, a commercial driver in Eku, Delta State, Godwin Akpama was reported to have had his head smashed by police operative for refusing to part with a bribe of N200.

  Confirming the ugly incident, Delta State Police Command said it had arrested five of its personnel including one Paul Audu who allegedly beat up a commercial bus driver and smashed his head over refusal to part with N200 at a check point.

  National Light gathered that the incident which occurred along Eku-Aburaka Road in Ethiope East Local Government Area created a scene as the driver was totally drenched in his own Blood after the attack.

According to Akpama, One of the policemen had stopped me at the check point demanding N200 as bribe. I told him I had no money and that I was conveying market women to the market. I later gave him N200 but he refused and started punching me.

  “Angered by the development, I shoved him aside and reminded him that he was committing an offence.”

  “He then told me to park the vehicle and come down which I did. He picked a plank and hit me severally and I slumped.”

  Speaking on the development, Delta State Police Image Maker, Onome Onovwakpoyeya stated that the five policemen had been arrested and tried in accordance with police rules. She stated that the driver and others at the scene of the incident were also invited to testify, stressing that disciplinary action had been taken against the officers.
