Anambra Fire Service takes safety sensitisation to homes, markets

THE Chief Fire Officer and Director of the Anambra State Fire Service, Martin Onyedikachukwu Agbili, yesterday, said that the agency had commenced fire safety education and sensitisation in markets across Anambra State.

Agbili disclosed this in a chat with National Light at the agency’s headquarters in Awka, explaining that although they have been carrying out such safety campaigns, the agency took particular interest in the ongoing fire prevention sensitisation in response to challenges that may come with the forthcoming harmattan period especially during the yuletide festivities and celebrations.

Noting that the  Fire Service has taken the safety campaign to Eke-Awka Market where it sensitised traders on fire prevention strategies, Agbili also said that the agency would extend the message to markets in Onitsha and other parts of Anambra State.

According to him, the agency will be on 24-hour stand-by duty to respond to fire calls and other emergencies.

“As we are coming closer to Christmas, we are also coming closer to the peak of the harmattan season. One of the things that usually happen this harmattan season is fire outbreaks and fire outbreaks come because of the carelessness of people who cannot adhere to fire safety measures. So, I will tell people to try as much as possible to avoid anything that can cause fire outbreaks this season. Fire safety management is everybody’s business,” Agbili said.

Therefore, he called on the public to cut-off grasses closer to buildings as this was responsible to many fire outbreaks in homes and offices.
