NCC bans sale, registration of new SIMs



NIGERIAN Communications Commission (NCC) yesterday ordered all mobile network operators nationwide to immediately suspend sale and activation of new Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards.

  A statement released by Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Ikechukwu Adinde, said it was absolutely necessary for operators to comply until the audit exercise had been concluded to allow an update of national subscriber registration database.

 Dr Adinde explained that the order was issued by Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, directing the commission to immediately embark on an audit of the subscriber registration database.

  He, however, said an exemption might be granted following approval from the federal government through the commission help to consolidate the achievement of the SIM card registration exercise.

  According to Adinde, non-compliance with the directive would be met with strict sanctions, including the possibility of withdrawal of operating license.

  The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has collected N251 billion as education tax in the first 10 months of 2020 and remitted the same to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) within the period.
