Obiano commends engineers for Anambra’s infrastructure



ANAMBRA State Governor, Willie Obiano has commended the Awka Branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers [NSE] for partnering the state government in the provision of infrastructural facilities.

Speaking during the investiture ceremony of the new chairman of the branch at the Marble Arch Hotel Awka, Governor Obiano, who was represented by Wilie Okafor, expressed appreciation to the Awka Branch of NSE for partnering the state government with respect to monitoring of public projects and offering professional advice to the government and donating the sum of N500,000 on behalf of the state government for the on-going Engineering Centre.

“The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Awka Branch has been in partnership with the state government on projects. Housing infrastructure needs engineers and infrastructure development in Anambra State is anchored on ‘Akuluo uno’ philosophy which has brought tremendous development which has to do with engineers, who mostly do the work.  We don’t joke with engineers. Anambra State under Governor Willie Obiano has been making tremendous achievements in housing estates and a lot of ndi Anambra are bringing in their capital for the development of the state”, he said.

 In his valedictory speech, the immediate past chairman of NSE, Awka Branch, Dr. Martin Agbili, who is the Chief Fire Officer in the state fire service, beat his chest for accomplishing his three-pronged agenda, which he coined as “retention, empowerment, and growth” in spite of the emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic which slowed down the organisation’s activities.

 In his acceptance speech, the 12th chairman of Awka branch of NSE, Dr. Victor Odinaka Okonkwo, who is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, pledged to leave the office better than he met it.

 “My tenure will focus majorly on three areas: Professional competence and development of member; engineering regulation and monitoring; and engineering center to provide the environment for the training and retraining of engineers and allied professionals”, he said.

 The highlight of the investiture ceremony was the conferment of awards for community development to the traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe B.I. Emeka, among others.

 The occasion was graced by the President of Nigerian Society of Engineers, Babagana Mohammed, represented by Mr Ofodile, the guest lecturer among others.
