63% of adults with disabilities unemployed – Report

A REPORT prepared by Inclusive Friends Association has revealed that 63 per cent of adults with disabilities in Nigeria are unemployed, while 30 per cent of out-of-school children were those with disabilities.

  The report also showed that the literacy rate for youth with disabilities stood at 30 per cent compared to 65 per cent of youths without disabilities.

  The 34 page report, which was prepared by IFA with support from Action Against Hunger, Child Development and Grant Programme, Save the Children and UKAid, contained detailed findings on the inclusion of PWDs in social protection in Nigeria using Jigawa, Kano States, Kaduna and Zamfara States as examples.

  The Executive Director of IFA, Grace Jerry, said about 105, 057, 896 persons lived in extreme poverty in Nigeria.

  “This clearly makes a case for social protection programmes to reduce the shocks that citizens would be exposed to. This is particularly crucial for persons with disabilities whose literacy rate for youth with disabilities are 30 per cent, compared to 65 per cent of youths without disabilities. Also, 63 per cent of adults with disabilities are unemployed and 30 per cent of out of school children are those with disabilities,” she said.
