Senate confirms Yahaya as COAS



…Urges him to tackle insecurity urgently
…Leaking NASS roof disrupts plenary

NIGERIA’S Senate today confirmed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the country’s substantive new Chief of Army Staff. 

  The Upper Chamber made the confirmation following recommendation of its Joint Committee on Defence and Army for confirmation of the nomination of Yahaya that was presented by Senator Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto North).  

  It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Yahaya as Acting Chief of Army Staff following the death of Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru who died in a plane crash near Kaduna International Airport penultimate before Buhari wrote to Senate, last week, requesting Yahaya’s confirmation as Chief of Army Staff. 

  According to President Buhari, he wrote the letter in line with the provisions of 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. 

  Meanwhile, a rain in Abuja this morning disrupted activities at the Upper Chamber following heavy leaking of the roof of the assembly complex .

  With the development, Senators who were already at the chamber were forced to come outside, discussing in groups.

  National Assembly staffers have in the last couple of minutes started packing the water with buckets and dustpans, just as the entire environment, forum is covered with water. 

  Some Senators, who came later while the place was filled with water, had to go through the House of Representatives.
