USAID IHP donates over N2m hospital training equipment to Ebonyi

UNITED States Agency for International Development (USAID) Integrated Health Program (IHP), has donated hospital training equipment worth over N2million to Ebonyi State.

  Coordinator of USAID IHP, Gladys Olisaeke, presented the equipment to the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Umezuike at a courtesy call in Cantinary City Ochiudo.

  According to Olisaeke, the equipment would be distributed to the 198 health facilities, which would be used for the training of health officers in the areas of family planning, maternal and newborn.

  She further said statistics showed that the maternal and child mortality and morbidity rate in Ebonyi State was higher compared to other southern states of Nigeria.

  The items donated to Ebonyi State Government by USAID IHP include premier Natalie, Upright newborn (bag mask), deep contraceptive implant & insertion kit, implant insertion & removal kits, stainless tablespoon, stainless bowl-36cm, MUAC strip/tape for the child, PPIUD kits Mama Natalie, Mama breast, Neo Natalie, Interval IUD kits MEC (Medical Eligibility Criteria) Wheel and bags and among others.

  She said, “Ebonyi is one of the Southeastern states that the mortality and morbidity is high of both mother and infant compared to other southern states. When you compare the statistics for women, children, adolescent, it’s not as good as other state, that’s one of the reasons we are concentrating our works here.

  “USAID in general, of course we have a lot of USAID funding programmes, six projects in health and as well as one projects in status quo. We have Integrated health program, we have breakthrough actions in Nigeria, PSM and others

  “We are focusing on maternal and newborn health, reproductive health and family planning, including gender and the third one is child health. The child health comprises integrated management of childhood illnesses and nutrition”.

  While responding on behalf of the state government, Dr Umezurike commended the USAID IHP for the donation and assured that the equipment would be safeguard and put into use.

  “We are going to ensure that the training is a huge success and again, let me on behalf of the governor and the good people of Ebonyi assure you that we will take every necessary step to protect the equipment,” he said.
