Lilu marks New Yam Festival

LILU community in Ihiala Local Government Council Area of Anambra State recently rolled out drums at  the palace of her traditional ruler, Igwe Godson Onyediri, to celebrate the 2021 Annual New Yam Festival.

Addressing the community while performing the symbolic cutting of yam tuber into  pieces, Onyediri expressed happiness that this year’s harvest was plentiful and rich.

The traditional ruler urged the younger generation to take more than a passing interest in agriculture as a means of feeding their families and also, for the prospective economic benefits.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the members of the  Igwe’s cabinet, Ichie Nnamdi Nwammadu enjoined youths to shun all forms of crime and embrace the new world of technology to develop their talents and the entire community.

Also reacting to the festival, a special guest, Eze Uzu Ichida, said that the laborious processes undergone by farmers to produce the new yam explains why it is celebrated with pomp and pageantry.

The ceremony went to its peak when Igwe Lilu, surrounded by his cabinet chiefs, cut the new yam into pieces and it was taken one after the other by the title holders of  community

After the eating of the new yam, various masquerades and  dance groups took their turns to entertain the audience.
