THE Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area has been commended as the best legacy that was bequeathed to the state in recent time by successive administration.

The commendation was made by members of Council of Anambra Elders and Leaders of Thought during their on-the-spot assessment and inspection tour of the facility with Gov. Willie Obiano, yesterday.

They also described ongoing International Conference Centre (ICC) project in Awka, Awka South Local Government Area as another milestone from which the state would begin to reap tremendous economic and social gains in no distant time.

Speaking after taking the non-partisan pressure group round the airport, Gov. Obiano told the elders that no kobo was borrowed from anybody to fund the project, from foundation to completion.

According to the governor, construction of the airport was conceived out of his vision to fast track  grassroots development in the state in similar way as Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, jumpstarted commercial activities around Ikeja and environs and also minimise hardships being suffered by Anambra people who use airports from neighbouring states.

Gov. Obiano also used the opportunity to urge the elders to join him in the campaign to rid Anambra of recent restiveness and exuberant agitations which, he explained, could derail the state from sustaining present tempo of economic and social development.

The governor equally took time to explain all aspects of the airport and the International Conference Centre to the elders who poured encomiums on him.

Responding on behalf of others, former Secretary General of Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku lauded Gov. Obiano for the vision of putting up the airport at a time most states are reeling under the economic effects of the pandemic.

According to Anyaoku, while the governor used the two projects to deliver on his promise to leave strong legacies to his successors, not borrowing to finance the projects proved his mettle as a frugal and prudent accountant.

Also speaking, former Prefect of Congregation for Divine Worship and the Disciple of Sacraments at Holy See, Francis Cardinal Arinze noted that the beauty around the airport illuminates Gov. Obiano’s commitment to environmental symmetry.

Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwemeka Ezeife, Chairman of South East Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Former Chairman of Police Service Commission, Chief Simon Okeke and others were among the inspection team.
