Obiano revitalised farming in Anambra – Umuchu PG

…Lauds gov for devp, stability in communities

PRESIDENT-GENERAL of Umuchu Improvement Union (UIU), Engr. Charles Ononuju, has commended Gov. Willie Obiano for revitalising the agricultural sector of Anambra State by making farming attractive, particularly to the youth.

Ononuju made the commendation in an interview with National Light at Civic Centre, Umuchu in Aguata Local Government Area during the town’s 2021 annual new yam festival on Saturday.

Explaining that encouraging young ones to take up agriculture as a vocation requires policies with big prospects of delivering lucrative farming, Ononuju said Gov. Obiano achieved the feat by going to work early with the Four Pillars blueprint.

According to him, this explains why many young ones now set up fisheries, poultries, and piggery while many others took to rice, maize, cassava and even yam cultivation.

All these, Ononuju explained, reduced youth unemployment in the state apart from bringing criminality to its lowest rate.

The president-general also credited Gov. Obiano with massive transformation of all the 179 communities.

According to him, the governor achieved it by activating a first-of-its-kind grassroots-oriented strategy through the choose-your-project community development programme which towns and communities benefitted under Phases I, II and III.

Explaining that the programme substantially bridged previous infrastructural deficit across the state, Ononuju also said Gov. Obiano has raised the bar so high not only for his successors and therefore ingrained his name in gold in Anambra’s history.

Speaking on the significance of new yam festival in Umuchu,   Ononuju said it has come to stay not only as harvest season festivity during which farmers that reaped highest yields in their crops, particularly yams, are rewarded with cash gifts as an incentive to rededicate themselves to farming.

Items distributed to distinguished farmers in the year edition include brand new tricycles, motorcycles, household and electrical appliances.

Earlier while performing the kolanut breaking rite, Traditional Ruler of Umuchu, Igwe Godson Ezechukwu prayed for Gov. Obiano and his family, adding that the peace, security and development brought to the state under his administration will not only remain indelible but present ready parameters with which his successors would be assessed by ndi Anambra.

Traditional dances and masquerades also added more pomp to the colourful ceremony.
