…Says Nov. 6 election bigger than merchants of violence, bloodshed
…Nobody attacked Gov, Soludo – CPS

GOVERNOR of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has reiterated his administration’s readiness to ensure that Anambra continues moving stronger than recent isolated security challenges in some parts of the state.

The governor stated this yesterday while commending combined team of policemen and soldiers for their gallantry in foiling an attack by unknown gunmen on an All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)’s campaign rally in Odoata Primary School, Ihiala, on Tuesday.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of ndi Anambra and APGA faithful that thronged Ogbaru Local Government Area Headquatres, Atani, venue of campaign rally in support of APGA governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, Prof. Charles Soludo, the governor said that the people will use every legitimate means to resist merchants of political violence’s bid to thwart the election through bloodshed.

Gov. Obiano also described the response of the security men as professional and patriotic.

“These security men and women in Anambra State lay down their lives for us and they do their best because of the encouragement they receive from the security-conscious state government, among other factors. We expect more professional exhibition as days go by and the election date approaches. We also plead with every aggrieved persons or groups to lay down their weapon and opt for dialogue in resolving all differences in the interest of our people,” he said.

Also speaking, Prof. Soludo lauded the security forces for their bravery and gallantry in repelling what would have been a bloody shout-out in which innocent victims may be caught up in the crossfire.

He promised not to be distracted by the selfish agenda of those bent on truncating the people’s choice by frustrating the election by all means.

But the state government has denied reports that Gov. Obiano’s convoy was attacked by gunmen at a campaign rally in Ihiala Local Government Area on Tuesday.

According to a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, James Eze, the said reports were totally false and should be disregarded.

“The fact is that when some gunmen engaged security operatives in a shootout in Ihiala today, Governor Obiano was attending a pre-scheduled political rally in Ogbaru Local Government Area along with Prof Chukwuma Soludo, the standard bearer of the All progressives Grand Alliance in the November 6, 2021 gubernatorial election in the state. The Ogbaru campaign was highly successful with a large turn of party members and supporters who came to reassure Prof. Soludo and APGA of their support in the coming election. Governor Obiano deeply regrets the shootout at Ihiala and the attendant loss of lives. He calls on all the politicians involved in the ongoing electioneering campaign in the state to join hands with him in calming the political temperature of the state in order to ensure a peaceful and fair election on November 6,” Eze said.

It will be recalled that an attack by unknown gunmen on a campaign rally in Ihiala on Tuesday, nearly turned bloody before they were repelled by a combined team of security agents.

An eye witness who preferred anonymity said the gunmen came on various motorcycles and in three vehicles, Toyota Lexus 350 ES with registration number EKY 765 EX, Toyota RAV4 with number JJJ 434FP and a Ford van whose number could not be ascertained because it caught fire during the exchange of bullets between the gun men and security forces.

Meanwhile, Anambra State Police Command has requested the people in Ihiala and neighbouring towns to be on look out for people with gunshots and report them, calling on hospitals and other health facilities in the area to report patients with gun wounds to security agencies before treatment.
