CATHOLIC Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Provence, Most Rev. Anthony J.V. Obinna, has raised an alarm over killings of Igbo youths, wondering whether the region will have future and fathers of the generation ahead going by the rate of youth mass killing that has persisted in the eastern part of Nigeria.

Bishop Obinna, who expressed the concern while preaching in a homily during the celebration of Eucharistic of Owerri Catholic Archdiocesan Council of the Catholic Men Organisation at the Mariam Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, also decried the heap of corpses that litter FMC, Owerri Morgue, just as he berated Army killings in Izombe, Oguta Local Government Area, Imo State.

The Catholic prelate said he was very much worried over the senseless killings of youths; adding that he was extremely disturbed that scores of unindentified corpses are lying in the Owerri Federal Medical Centre (FMC) mortuary. “They are in varying degrees of decomposition”, he lamented.

Bishop Obinna said that he visited FMC Morgue last week and saw a large number of youths’ corpses and got shocked, shed tears and began to wonder, according to him “whether the morgue has become corpse yard”.

According to Archbishop, the lifeless bodies were mainly youths, the fathers of tomorrow, who were senselessly mowed down by both state and non state actors.

He said that only a few hours ago, he got wind of killing of two soldiers, a civilian and arson going on at Izombe, Oguta Local Government, in Imo State. “Bloodletting is too much in our own state”, he averred.

The prelate said that soldiers have been pumped into the South East, thereby militarizing the area to the discomfort and as well, tempting the citizenry. He recalled with grief that death threats are now hanging on the necks of bishops that took part with the region’s meeting with governors in Enugu State.

Bishop Obinna said he was not bothered at 70 years if anybody kills him, adding that he was already heading to his grave. “Let us see how the planner will go about that”, he enthused.
