Tanker fire kills five, injures many in Adamawa

FIVE people died while many others sustained fatal injuries yesterday during a conflagration that sparked off when an articulated lorry laden with premium motor spirit (PMS) exploded in Kasuwan Gyela area of Mubi, Adamawa State.

  Eyewitnesses said the inferno occurred in a filling station while petrol was being transferred from the tanker directly into numerous jerry cans resulting in a horrendous explosion that killed the victims.

  While a resident called Habu Garba explained that at least five people were burnt to death with many others sustaining serious injuries, another resident, Adamu Madobi, said he participated in burial of three brothers that died in the incident.

  According to Madobi, more than 50 tricycles parked around the filling station were also destroyed in the fire.

  Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADDEMA), Muhammad Sulaiman confirmed the incident, adding that injured victims were receiving treatments at a hospital.

  It will be recalled that Mubi is a commercial border town known as a hub for smugglers ferrying jerry cans of petrol overnight into Cameroon.
