…As Anambra commissions Int’l Passenger, Cargo Airport
ANAMBRA State Governor, Willie Obiano on Friday said ndi-Anambra are more than ready to host visitors from across the world as the newly constructed Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport, Umueri, is commissioned for commercial operations.
Speaking during the epoch event, Governor Obiano said the airport despite being a new airport is already being rated one of the best airports in Nigeria and sub-Sahara Africa.
“This airport has been certified and has met all needs for commercial purposes.” The governor stated, noting that initially scheduled flights would not make their landing at the airport on Friday but would fully take off operations as soon as they have their counter stands in the airport.
“The flights that were fully booked for today, both from Abuja and Lagos could not come because the regulatory authorities said the commercial airlines that will operate here will need to have counters here before operations will start”, the governor disclosed.
Governor Obiano enumerated some of the airlines to begin operations in the airport to include; Air Peace, Ibom Air, Dana Air, United Nigeria Air and Anab Jets. “They will have to set up their counter before flights will commence.”
He added, “the dreams we have nurtured for 30 years have come true today. We fought many battles to be here today, including COVID-19 lockdowns. I have been assured by aviation experts that this is going to be the most viable airport in Nigeria.”
He charged ndi-Anambra to ensure the momentum of astounding feats is sustained in the state by choosing leadership with proven integrity and experience. “We need a man whose vision is greatly acclaimed to take over the state and be able to steer the ship, and that man is Soludo. Our state is on the runway and we need a competent hand to pilot it, and with Soludo in the cockpit, our state is in safe hands.” Obiano maintained.
“I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for approving this Airport, also Sidika for the oversight activities he did here, and also Nuhu of NCAA.
In his address, former National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Senator of the Federal Republic, Victor Umeh, extolled APGA exemplary service to the people in their leadership, noting that the regimes of Peter Obi and current governor, Willie Obiano have shown APGA’s pact with ndi-Anambra.
“We’re happy you (Obiano) never lowered the standard of APGA. You started well and have continued from where Obi stopped. You have served very well and the people are seeing what you are doing. Today’s commissioning of the airport is yet another of your dreams and you have brought it to fruition.”
The senator recalled that in 1982 the project was attempted by government in power then to no avail. “We tried it at Oba and it failed. The land had been taken over by erosion now. Obi wanted to do it (airport), he acquired this land and paid some compensation, and you came and paid in full the compensation and also went on to construct the airport.”
The Speaker, Anambra State House of Assemby, Uche Okafor said the economic benefits the airport will offer ndi-Anambra would be immense and proof of visionary quality of the state’s leadership.
He commended the cordial relationship between the chief executive and the legislative arm which facilitated the smooth completion of the project in record time.
