Shoot-out in APC national secretariat

…Three feared dead, many injured
…Police take over premises

AT LEAST three people are feared to have died during a shoot-out that occurred in national headquarters of All Progressives Congress (APC) located on Blantyre Street, Wuse II area of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, yesterday.

Many others sustained various degrees of injuries as people made their way out of the location while gunshot sound rent the air as shooting continued.

The gun incident that started around 3:00pm lasted for over one hour, bringing normal business to an abrupt end around the area as people scampered for safety.

An eye witness said one of the victims was a woman that hawked fruits around the area who was caught in the crossfire while the other two were security guards who confronted the gun men that attacked the premises.

According to him, although the shoot-out had ended when heavily armed policemen arrived to take over the premises, the entire vicinity was still pervaded by tension.

Four patrol vans were positioned at entry and exit points to forestall possible breakdown of law and order.

Though the identity of the gunmen are still unknown, there are indications that the shooting may not be unconnected with moves by aggrieved party members to effect change in party’s leadership.

An insider said although there has been widespread disaffection or wrangling in the party, leading up to the public spat between camps loyal to National Chairman of Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni on one side and Senator Representing Zamfara Central, Kabiru Marafa on the other, the recently conducted ward, local government and state congresses exacerbated it to boiling point among those that felt shortchanged.
