Nigerian Girl Guides mark Int’l Day to end violence against women

NIGERIAN Girl Guides Association, Anambra State Chapter has joined their counterparts all over the world to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

  The day as in previous years, launches 16 days of activism to be concluded on December 10, marking the International Human Rights Day. 

   Speaking on the theme for this year’s event, Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now, the Assistant State Commissioner, Nigerian Girl Guides Association, Anambra State,  Ekene Njelita explained the importance of the colour of the event, saying the color ‘orange’ symbolises a brighter future, free of violence.

   She also stated that the colour equally serves as a means of demonstrating solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence and it is therefore used as the color of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which aims at challenging violence being meted on women and girls.

   According to her, the campaign runs every year from  November 25 being the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to  December 10, Human Rights Day. She outlined ways to ensure end to gender based violence especially as it concerns women and girls who are most vulnerable to include; listening  to and believing survivors,  teaching the next generation and learn from them; calling for responses and services fit for purpose
