Odogwu becomes Anambra NUJ’s Chairman



NIGERIA Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, Friday, elected a new executive to pilot the affairs of the union for the next three years.

   In the  keenly contested election held at Godwin Ezeemo Int’l Press Center, Awka, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu of the Correspondents Chapel emerged winner of the contest, polling 110 votes to defeat his closest rival, comrade Abuchi Onwumelu of Fides Chapel who ganered 103 votes while Comrade Emma Udeagha did not get any vote.

  Other elected officers were comrade Ngozi Obileri of the ABS Chapel, 142 votes to defeat Comrade Betty Onuchukwu , who got 71votes while others who emerged unopposed were: Alloysius Ofodile of the Local Govt Information Chapel- Secretary, Okechukwu Onuegbu- Assistant Secretary, Ogemdi Ozoemena of Living Christ Chapel-Treasurer, John Ndu of National Light Chapel- Financial Secretary and Ifeyinwa Iloanya- Internal Auditor.

  Declaring the winner, the Chairman of the State NUJ Election/Screening Committee, Comrade Victor Agusiobo, a former Southeast Vice Chairman of Nigerian Guild of Editors, said a total of 320 journalists were registered for the election but only 213 were duly accredited and participated, urging members of the union to support the new leaders to achieve a better NUJ.

  While congratulating the newly elected officers, a chairman emeritus, Comrade Nathaniel Anigbo

reminded them of the enormous work awaiting them and charged them to sanitise the system

  In an acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Dr Odogwu, a lecturer in Mass communication Department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said he would surely live up to his campaign promises, even as he enjoined all the contestants and members of the union to join hands with him in moving the council forward. 

  The outgoing Chairman of NUJ, Anambra State Council, Comrade Francis Ekpone, commended members and contestants for their conduct during the poll, even as he handed over all the council properties under his care to the new chairman.

  Sharing her excitement, the winner of the position of Vice Chairman, Mrs Ngozi Obileri said she was  elated on the outcome of the elections, 

  “This is the first time we would experience such a tranquil election. It was peaceful, well coordinated. It is overwhelming that journalists came  from far and near to cast their franchise. “

  Meanwhile, the first runner up, Abuchi Onwumelu, in an interview spoke extensively on the outcome of the elections.

   “l well appreciate the fact that only two outcomes can be got from any contest: victory and defeat.

  “Let me first congratulate the winner of the election, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu. I dare say that he is worthy of the trust our members have given him, and I assure him of my best regards. I won’t hesitate to render help when and if called upon as the union comes first.”
