UNILAG denies gunmen’s kidnap of students



SOCIAL media was agog yesterday with reports of invasion of University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, by masked gunmen who went about chasing students and ‘loading’ those within their reach in vehicles before fleeing to unknown destination with their victims.

  Video footages that went viral showed some parts of the campus embroiled in heavy fear as students that survived the raid recounted their ordeals with some saying the invasion was carried out by ritualists who swooped on the students to kidnap them.

  But a statement issued by from the Communication Unit of UNILAG denied any such invasion, saying there had never been any attempted kidnap of students of UNILAG on campus.

  “The Management of University of Lagos (UNILAG) wishes to inform the general public that the rumour about an attempted kidnap within the university campus is false. The incident in the video was a case of social misconduct and physical assault between students, in which one party attempted to flee the scene and was apprehended by the university security towards Onike gate axis of the university. The case is being handled by the Security Unit and Division of Students Affairs. Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor and University Management wish to assure students, parents and the public that the security and safety of all students remained a priority at the University of Lagos,” the statement said.
