Catholic Diocese of Nnewi: Bishop Okoye begins reign today

ALL is set for Bishop-designate of Nnewi, Rt. Rev Jonas Benson Okoye, to begin his reign as Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, today

  A release issued by the authorities says the ceremony will be kicked off with a pontifical High Mass to be celebrated in Assumpta Cathedral, along Nnewi-Nnobi Road, Nnewi at 9:00am.

  The release further said that Catholic Bishops, priests and other dignitaries from Anambra State, Nigeria and beyond will attend the Mass.

  It will be recalled that Bishop Okoye was on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 appointed by Pope Francis to take over as Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese in succession of pioneer Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev Hilary Paul Odili Okeke, who retired in January, aged 75.

  Okoye’s appointment coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi that was created on November 28, 2001.

  Until his current appointment, Okoye was Auxiliary Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, who has paid his dues through the ranks of priesthood and education beginning from his ordination as seventh indigenous priest of Adazi Nnukwu, Anaocha Local Government Area, on August 29, 1992.
