Religious decries indecorum of mothers

A RELIGIOUS in the Catholic faith, Reverend Sister Mary Bennett Azuka Ezeokoli has expressed sadness over the inability of some mothers in current Nigeria’s society to uphold moral rectitude and bring up their wards in a socially acceptable standard of moral values.

Sister Ezeokoli from the Congregation of Immaculate Heart Conception (IHM) disclosed this during the celebration of 2022 Holy Child Association’s annual celebration held at Basilica of The Most Holy Trinity, Onitsha, in Anambra State, on Saturday.

Lamenting what she described as abdication of primary role of society building starting from the family institution, Sister Ezeokoli chided mothers whose conducts betray the sanctity of motherhood.

“It is regrettable that some mothers appear in public dressed in the most irresponsible way and encourage their daughters to do same.

I know that the first teachers of the children are the parents. It worries me that some mothers appear unashamedly in public wearing torn jean trousers, transparent clothes that expose their curves and private areas and skimpy skirts or gowns that put their moral decency to question.

She wondered what those engaging in the act mean for the society and themselves when by their actions of impunity is promoted in the society.

“ I advise parents, particularly mothers to always embrace those values that will help their children grow in the fear of God.” She added that a  mother even if she is 18 years should behave like a mother and should not by action or inference fall short of the expectation.

Reiterating the place of parents in forming the personality of the child, Sister Ezeokoli said, “the school will do their own part; it may not be too difficult a task if the family does their part well.”

Narrating her upbringing, Sister Ezeokoli lamented that despite passing through the tutelage of her mother who had no touch with any formal education, the discipline and strong values she and her ilk inculcated in people of their generation is incomparable with the training educated mothers of this age give to their wards.

“The illiterate mothers that brought people like me up are still the model for good society.”

The IHC sister urged the incoming governor to recalibrate the former Governor  Peter Obi model of school development and match it with Governor Obiano’s system to improve on the standard already set.

She used the occasion of the Holy Childhood Association celebration to appeal to priests to scale up the Pontifical message in the HCA to ensure children are put on the good path of life. ” It is the vision of Pope Francis that through the HCA apostolate, children, especially from the Catholic faith will have the discipline required to take them up the ladder of life inculcated in them,” she stated.
